AGE CONCERN SHOP IN PORT ERIN RE-OPENS FOLLOWING REFURBISHMENT
07 Jun 2021
The shop was officially opened by Olga Stirling aged 95, Ruth Matthews aged 85 and Don Matthews aged 90, who helped set up the first Age Concern Charity shop in Port Erin. The trio have together clocked up a magnificent 75 years of volunteering for the Charity.
Olga said: “I really enjoy coming into the Age Concern shop and meeting people. It is wonderful to be welcoming people back.”
The shop now has significantly better disabled access for customers and volunteers. The upgrade has created a better and safer environment, and energy efficiency improvements will reduce running costs.
The Charity has also opened a nearby pop-up Donation Station, next to the Post Office, where you can drop off pre-loved clothes, accessories, jewellery, household, vintage items, books and music.
Age Concern is also happy to arrange for donations to be collected. Please phone 631740 to arrange.
Maureen Cowbourne, Deputy Chief Executive of Age Concern IoM said: “We are so grateful to everyone who has called in to our new Donation Station to drop off items. Lots of people had a clear-out during lockdown and very kindly held onto items for us.
“Our shops in Port Erin and Ramsey are community hubs in friendly, accessible spaces. They are a great way to raise essential funds so we can deliver our services for local older people.
“As an independent local charity, we rely on the support and generosity of volunteers and donors. Income fell considerably during the lockdowns with the shops closed and fundraisers cancelled, and we are working hard to catch up.
“The public and the local community have been absolutely amazing all the way through the pandemic. We're really grateful for all the support. We have been working hard to get the shops in Ramsey and Port Erin open again and having been so busy for the past few weeks, we could really use a few extra pairs of hands.
“If you can spare an hour or two to volunteer in our friendly environment, give me a call on 631740 for a chat. There are all sorts of different tasks that need doing and we will work with you to find what suits you best.”
To arrange a collection of donations please phone 631740.
